I have run in the following

Half Marathon ( Hurricane) 2:19

                       ( Snow Canyon) 2:02:47

10 K (Enterprise) 1:03

12 K (Hurricane Peach Days) 1:22

Marathon (St. George) 4:32

Painters 5K 36:35

Hurricane Half (2008) 2:02:25

Short-Term Running Goals:

I have a half coming up in august in Provo that I talked my wife into trying, and I just started training again for the St George marathon.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Of course I would some day love to qualify for Boston.

Personal:

When I started running, which was back in Feb. of 2007, I weighed 110 lbs. more than I do now.  Although I do not run as fast as I would like, I feel like as long as I continue to progress, I can make it to my goals. I have found that running has been essential to keeping the weight off for me.  When I start to take it easy after a race is over, that is when the pounds can creep back on!

This was my first marathon, and it was a good experience overall.  Don't get me wrong, I realy started to struggle with cramps in my calves and thighs at about 19 miles in, but I was able to finish, and even within about two minutes of what my goal time was.

Welcome to the blog! It looks like you have a pretty structured training schedule and some great experience under your belt. When is your next half-marathon?

I'll be trying to get into the Moab half in March.

Goood luck!

From gigantor on Sat, Nov 03, 2007 at 21:03:58

My next Half is on November 17th. There is also one on Jan 19th that I plan to run.

Thanks, and good luck to you too!

This was a speed workout.  I did a 1-mile warm up, and then did a ladder consisting of a 400, 800, 1200, 800, and 400, with a jog of half the distance inbetween each leg.  There was also a 1-mile cool down.

After I got back home, my wife wanted to go for a short jog, so I went for a 2 miler with her.  I was surprised how fast I got sore while jogging quite slow!

Welcome to the blog! How fast did you run those intervals?

Welcome to the blog. I am very impressed with your dedication and the amazing weight loss results you haveaccomplished in such little time. Keep it up and you will reach your goals.

Holy Smokes! You are amazing with all the weight you've lost this year, and your great running. Plus you have a great blog name. Welcome!

From Jon on Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 20:02:19

Welcome to the blog! I lost 30 pounds this year and thought I was doing good- can't imagine your 110! Do you live in Hurricane?

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Nov 02, 2007 at 11:46:20

You were probably sore from the intervals. Which means it is not time to do them yet. Invest your extra energy in going longer, and if you are out of time, then run a warm-up mile, run fairly hard for as much time as you have but not all out, and then back off on the last half mile or so.

Thanks for all of the support and the feedback! It is greatly appreciated.

For the past few weeks, whenever I have to run at the gym and I know that I have to run for about an hour or so, I have been trying to hit 6.55 miles in one hour (half the distance of a half marathon).  Today I finally was able to get there!

Now go for 7.

From Lyman on Thu, Nov 01, 2007 at 08:43:44

Excellent progress. You are well on your way to hitting a sub 2:00 half considering that in race conditions you have fresh legs and the adrenaline will be pumping...You've already blown past your 10k PR.

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Nov 02, 2007 at 11:51:10

Congratulations on the progress. I assume this was an all-out effort. If so, for training purposes you need to run easier, I would recommend about 10:00 pace or so, whatever pace you can talk comfortably at.

From gigantor on Fri, Nov 02, 2007 at 21:46:32

I would'nt say that it was all out, but if I was going to continue running after this point, I would have slowed down to a 10:00 pace for a few minutes and then slowly sped back up.

From ArmyRunner on Sat, Nov 03, 2007 at 23:48:07

If this is the case, not being all out, then it sounds more like a tempo pace workout. It is probably ok to do this once a week or so right now as long as you don't feel like you are going all out. If it does not make you sore or too tired to run the next couple days then this is a good workout for you. However, on the other days your easy runs should probably be at a comfortable talking pace which I would guess is between 9:30-10:00 pace.

Today I did not have a lot of time, so I had to do a short distance.  I decided that I would just go all out and see how fast I could run the three miles.  I was able to finish in 27:01.  Darn that extra second!

Total Distance
3.86

Didn't have a lot of time to run before work, so I could only squeeze this much distance out of 35 minutes.  Not too bad for me, but I know that I can do it faster.  I am sure that it is mental more than anything.

Total Distance

Since I am training for a half marathon, and I knew that I wanted to go at least 11 miles today, I thought "What the heck, I will just go the whole distance to see what my time will be".  Well, my goal for the race is to finish within 2 hours, and I did it in 2:07:30 or so.  The problem with where I chose to run today is that the last 2 miles or so is uphill.  Not steep really, but steady.  Anyway, I figure that with the adreneline and excitement for the race, I might be able to come pretty close!

Although I did not have too much time after work today (a 131/2 hour day!), I was able to go to the gym and run on the treadmill for about 40 minutes.  By the time the 40 minutes was up, I had gone 4.52 miles, which was a big feat for me!  I was very excited at the end of the run, and a part of me (a very small though) kind of wanted to keep going!  If only I would have had more time...

I,m coming down for the race, hows the course?

From gigantor on Tue, Nov 13, 2007 at 09:42:35

Well, it starts out with a pretty steep downhill. Most of the course is downhill, but there is a point where you get to the bottom of the canyon and then you go up one of the trails for about 3 miles. Although it is not steep uphill, it is pretty steady. Then, you turn around and the rest is downhill to the finish.

Today was my speed workout.  Since the race is on Sat., we took it easy today.  After the 1 mile warm-up, we did 8 400's, with a 200 jog inbetween.  Then a 1 mile cool-down.  total time was 41:35 for the 4.27 miles.  My best 400 was in 1:48, which is pretty good for me.

I really wanted to break 2 hours, but at about 10 1/2-11 miles my left quad (especially right above and to the right of my knee) started to cramp up on me.  The course had a lot of downhill in it and I think it was mainly due to the pounding.  My time from a half marathon that I ran in May was more than 2:19, so I guess this is a great improvement for me.

Excellent improvement Gigantor! 17 minutes off a half is equal to taking 34 min. off a marathon. That's HUGE! Now your blog name is starting to make sense. Keep it up! And be nice to that quad!

I have been having a lot of pain in the arch of one of my feet.  Because of this pain, I had to jog nearly the entire hour.  I am kind of frustrated, but I am not sure if I need to give my foot some time off to recover from whatever this pain is.

From jeff on Thu, Nov 22, 2007 at 04:34:01

Hey, way to go! I started serious running in March. Have lost 35 pounds and feel great. It is hard to deal with the injuries as they seem to happen all too frequently and always at the wrong time. To have lost the weight and to be running well the actual race times seem to lose som significance. My justification at least.

From Ian on Thu, Nov 22, 2007 at 08:22:53

Your really doing well with your running and weight loss. In my first year of running I had more injuries than at anytime since. My tendons, joints and muscles were much slower to adapt to the repetitive punishment of running than my aerobic system. I had a similar problem with my foot. What helped for me was to slow down, walk if necessary but keep moving. Stretch the foot gently, massage your foot, put a glass bottle in the freezer and after your run roll your foot over the bottle backwards and forwards.

Nothing like a run on Thanksgiving morning.  Had to do this one at the gym, as I had to go to work right afterwards.

Today I tried to go a bit faster on the treadmill than I have in the past week.  By the time I got the treadmill up to 6.3 miles per hour that pesky pain in my right arch was back with a vengence.  I did get me a Strassberg sock today though, so I am excited to see how that and some serious massage and stretching will help.

Comments
From James on Sun, Nov 25, 2007 at 19:49:54

The arch problem could be the beginning of Plantar Fasciitis. You may want to make sure your shoes are the rught ones for your foot type.

Total Distance

Today was a run out on the road, which felt good.  I didn't run full speed, but I think it was like 80-85%.  I have been wearing the Straussberg sock for two nights now, and I was quite surprised how much better it felt while running.  I think if I keep taking it easy and wearing the sock, I should be back to normal soon.

Three miles is all I had time for after work.  I feel like I have been slacking this week, but I was out of town until last night.  This morning I just could not get by behind out of bed.  Well, I will just do the best I can for the rest of the week, and hope that next week will be better.

Just call it a recovery week. I do this every 3-4 weeks so I don't get burned out and it helps.

Total Distance

Today is more like it.  The pain in my foot (possible PF) feels much better since I have been wearing the Strassburg sock (or as my wife likes to call it, the goofy sock).  As I ran today I could feel it a little, but there was very little pain compared to how it was last week.  I have only been wearing the sock since Sat night, so I know it will continue to get better.

Total Distance

I decided to take it kind of easy today.  Although my foot hardly hurts at all anymore, I feel as if my stamina has decreased somewhat.  While running on the treadmill, I an tired and out of breath at a slower speed than I was before the half marathon.

Total Distance

Today has felt the best so far this week.  I was able to get back up to the speed I was running before the half marathon.  By the time my hour was up on the treadmill, my foot ( PF) hurt a little, but nothing like it was two weeks ago.

Although this may look like a race, it is acctually just a regular run.  I didn't have a particular distance in mind when I set out from my house this morning, and I ended up running all over St George by the time I was done.  I guess you could say it was my impersonation of a "Forrest Gump" morning.  Anyway, when I got about 1 1/2 blocks away from my wife's work I had hit 13.1 miles, so I thought I would just walk the last little bit.  It felt good to get out and run a longer distance, and although my legs are tired and sore, it is a good tired. :)
